Unpopular opinion: The push for compostable cups feels insincere at my local spot

I've noticed my regular morning stop switched to compostable cups recently. When I asked the barista where to put them after, she said they just go in the normal bin. That got me thinking if this change is really helping or just for show. A lot of shops seem to be doing this without proper waste setup. It feels like a missed chance to make a real difference.

Wait, she actually told you to throw them in the regular trash? That makes the whole thing completely useless then. Honestly feels worse than just using normal cups at that point.

Isn't it just greenwashing if there's no place to actually compost them? My building has three bins but I still mess up which plastic goes where, so maybe I'm part of the problem. Feels like a lot of places just want the good press without doing the work.
