Took me 3 years to realize I was loading parts too far into the vise jaws
Had a 7075 aluminum plate shift mid-cut and scrap a $300 job. Found out from a old timer that leaving 1/8 inch of jaw space at the back prevents lift. Anyone else catch a bad habit way later than they should?

Question if a $300 scrap is really worth losing sleep over. A plate shifting on you happens, but that old timer's trick is more of a nice to know than a must follow. I'd just double check my setup and move on.

That trick about leaving jaw space is something I read in a trade magazine a few years back... actually said the same thing about 7075 lifting if you bottom out the part in the back. I never tried it myself but it makes sense if you think about the pressure pushing things up instead of down. $300 is a lot to just shrug off in my book, especially when a little setup change could save it. Those little details from old timers are usually worth listening to in my experience.
