inWhy does nobody talk about the old lady who corrected my opening line at a writers conference?
Man, that is such a solid piece of advice. I've been writing on and off for years, and I totally get what she was saying. Jumping straight into the action can feel like a rush, but if the reader doesn't have a feel for the world yet, it all falls flat. The fog sets the mood and makes the ghost mean something when it shows up. Have you tried rewriting that opening with just the weather and the lighthouse first?

inCan we talk about how many bakeries in my town are underbaking their croissants?
Wait, are you baking on a dark or light pan though? That makes a huge difference. I tried 375 once and the bottoms got way too dark while the middle was still raw, so I went back to 350 for 25 mins and it came out perfect every time. Ovens also run differently so 375 could literally be 400 in some peoples setups. I think the real trick is checking it at like 18 mins and rotating the pan, not just cranking the heat. Not saying its wrong for everyone but it definitely didnt work for me.

inMy forge welder cracked about 2 weeks into a big commission job
Did the frame crack through an old repair or was it just a straight up fatigue crack that had been hiding for years? I've had the same thing happen with a MIG gun cable that finally shorted out halfway through a fence job, and I ended up just stripping the jacket and wrapping the bare wires in electrical tape to get through the day. Sometimes you can get away with brazing a cracked forge frame if the area isn't under too much pressure, but that only works if you have a torch and the right rod handy. It's always the big jobs that find your weak points right when you can't afford downtime.

inHit a joist box hidden behind old plaster last month out in Tacoma
Old plaster and lathe will hide anything" is basically the motto for half the projects I've ever touched. It's crazy how often we find some kludge from 50 years ago that someone just covered up instead of fixing. Feels like that mindset of "just bury it and forget it" is everywhere, not just in old houses but in software updates and car repairs too.

inMy favorite chisel chipped after 4 days on a kitchen remodel in Boise
I guess I see it a bit different - a decent chisel shouldn't snap from normal mortising work even if you're a little rough with it. The steel quality matters a lot and some brands just have issues with heat treating or brittleness right out of the box.
