A senior machinist corrected my work holding on a Haas VF-2 and it clicked
I was at a job shop in Portland for 8 months just cranking out parts with soft jaws and never questioning it. This old guy named Rick watched me struggle with vibration on a 6061 aluminum run and said "your jaws are grabbing air, not the part." He showed me how to cut custom step jaws in 10 minutes and my surface finish went from garbage to glass. Anyone else get a reality check from someone who's been doing this since before G-code was common?

No kidding, the guy who taught me how to set up a lathe chuck was like 70 and kept muttering "chips are sharp, don't be a hero" every time I reached in without gloves. Did Rick also just stare at you for a solid 10 seconds before dropping the knowledge bomb, or was that just my guy? I spent two weeks chasing a chatter problem on some 304 stainless before an old-timer walked over, tapped my tool holder with a dead blow hammer and said "your stickout is longer than my patience." Best advice I ever got, honestly.

Buddy of mine had a similar experience with an old machinist named Frank. Frank watched him struggle for like 20 minutes fitting a boring bar before he just walked over, flipped the tool 180 degrees, and walked away without a word. My friend said Frank never even made eye contact, just grunted and pointed at the part once it was done. Still talks about that guy like he was a wizard.
