Switched from a $60 monthly bus pass to biking, saved $720 a year

I live in Portland and was dropping $60 a month on a bus pass without thinking about it. Decided to buy a used bike off Craigslist for $150 instead. Fixed it up myself with some YouTube help. After six months the bike has paid for itself and I'm actually getting to work faster. Anyone else found a cheaper way to commute that surprised them?

My chain snapped in the rain last month and I had to push the bike two miles to a shop lol. The $40 repair plus the new lock I bought after mine got stolen basically ate up two months of bus pass savings.

Just a heads up, your new bike is going to start asking for more money than the bus pass ever did. Tires, chains, lube, and the occasional "oops I need a new derailleur" add up fast. I've had two bikes that ended up costing me more per mile than a cab ride. But hey, at least you're getting a workout while your wallet slowly empties itself.

That "your wallet slowly empties itself" line hits close to home. My own bike has become a pretty expensive hobby once I started upgrading parts.
