I finally gave the cash envelope system a real try

For months I thought it was just a hassle for people who can't use a budget app. Then my partner and I blew our grocery budget by $150 in April, mostly on random snacks. We switched to putting our $600 monthly food money in actual envelopes labeled 'groceries' and 'eating out'. It's been three weeks and we still have $80 left in the grocery envelope because seeing the cash go makes you think twice. Has anyone else found a physical trick that worked better than an app for them?

Honestly, it just seems like a lot of work to me. I get the idea, but carrying all that cash around feels like a step back. What happens if you lose an envelope? My bank app shows me what I spend as soon as I buy something, so it's basically the same thing without the hassle. Maybe you just needed a better reminder on your phone.

Saw my buddy try the envelope thing last month. He left his "fun money" envelope on a bus bench and that was the end of that experiment. His bank app never gets left behind.
