Just figured out how to eat for under $5 a day in Tokyo

Got stuck there last fall with way less cash than planned. A local guy at my hostel saw me staring at a vending machine ramen. He said, 'Go to a supermarket after 8 pm.' The markdowns are insane. Scored full meals for like 300 yen. Sushi, bento boxes, everything. Ate like a king on a beggar's budget. Anyone know similar tricks for other big cities?

London supermarkets do that too, it's a lifesaver.

My broke month in Seoul was saved by convenience store triangle kimbap. Those little rice and seaweed rolls were under 1000 won each. I'd grab two, plus a banana from a street cart, and that was a solid meal for about $2 total. The 7-Elevens and GS25 stores are everywhere, and their ready-to-eat sections are way better than what we have back home.
