I went with laminate countertops instead of butcher block and I don't regret it

Everyone always says butcher block is the cheap upgrade that looks high end. I tried it in my last kitchen and after 6 months the wood near the sink started swelling up. I redid the whole thing with laminate from Lowe's for $180 total. It's been two years now and it still looks fine, even with my kids spilling stuff on it daily. I think butcher block is way overhyped for anyone who actually uses their kitchen. Anyone else skip the trendy option and go with something boring that just works?

Yeah, "butcher block near a sink is INSANE," it's like asking for a kitchen experiment gone wrong.
