I see so many people skip the primer step on old wood trim

It chips in a year because the new paint can't stick to the old finish. Has anyone else found a good primer under $20 that actually works?

Ugh, tell me about it. I made that exact same mistake last month and it cost me a whole weekend of work to fix. Why does it always look so simple right before you mess it up? I had to go back and redo everything from scratch. It's one of those things you only learn by doing it wrong first.
