My roommate called my 'fancy' lentil soup 'bean water' and I can't unsee it

I was so proud of this soup I made with a $2 bag of lentils, a carrot, and an onion. I called it 'rustic French lentil bisque' to make it sound fancy. My roommate took one look and said, 'Anna, this is just warm bean water with stuff in it.' I was a little offended at first, but honestly, she was right. Now I just call it 'lentil soup' and focus on making it taste good, not sound fancy. Has anyone else had a meal get roasted by a friend?

Remember that time my friend spent hours on a "deconstructed caprese salad"? He arranged little piles of chopped tomato, basil shreds, and tiny mozzarella balls all separated on a huge plate. His brother walked in, stared at it, and just said "Oh, you made a pizza that fell apart." My friend was so mad, but we all cracked up. He never tried to deconstruct a salad again.

That "deconstructed caprese salad" story is spot on. The trick is to only deconstruct things that actually get better when you take them apart. If the whole point is the ingredients mixing together, like in a caprese, you're just making extra work and a worse dish. His brother had it right, it's just a mess on a plate. Save the fancy plating for stuff where you want to taste each part alone.
