My brother swore by adding a can of chickpeas to stretch a curry, and after trying it last Tuesday, my usual four servings became six for about 50 cents more.
What's your best cheap ingredient to bulk up a meal?

A whole bag of rice, my wallet's best friend.

That "wallet's best friend" line is so true. I used to buy the small boxes until I realized how much I was wasting. Now I get the big bag and it lasts me months. @verab28, I started with long grain too but switched to jasmine. The cost difference isn't much when you buy in bulk and the flavor is better for everyday meals. A good rice cooker makes the big bag even easier to deal with.

What kind of rice are you buying? I always go for the cheap long grain.
