I used to buy pre-shredded cheese every week until I saw the price difference

I finally crunched the numbers last month and realized I was paying almost $2 more per bag for shredded cheese compared to a block. At Aldi, a 16oz block of cheddar is $3.49 but the shredded version is $5.29. So now I just grate it myself in five minutes and save about $40 a year. Has anyone else made that switch and noticed a big difference in their grocery bill?

And yeah, totally did the same thing a few months back. Was buying the big bags at Costco but noticed the block was way cheaper per pound so I started grating my own. Honestly the only downside is washing the grater but saving that $40 a year is totally worth the extra two minutes of work.

Totally agree on the grater washing pain. Tried a trick my buddy showed me - spray a little cooking oil on the grater before you start. The cheese slides off way easier and rinses clean in like 10 seconds flat. Also started freezing my blocks for about 15 minutes before grating. Makes them harder so you get nicer shreds and less mushy clumps. That $40 adds up quick too, especially when you're making mac and cheese twice a week like my house does.
