I hit 100 logged plays of Catan and it made me question the whole 'gateway game' idea

I mean, I've always heard people call it the perfect starter game, but after my 100th logged session last weekend, I realized I actually find the trading and resource blocking super stressful for new players. Maybe it's just me, but watching someone get boxed in on turn three feels like a rough introduction to the hobby. Does anyone else have a different 'first game' they suggest that avoids that kind of early player elimination vibe?

What's your go-to game for new players instead?

Disagree completely, the stress is the whole point. Catan teaches real game skills like negotiation and reading the board, which fluffy games skip. Getting blocked early is a lesson in planning better next time, not a reason to quit. My friends learned more from one tough Catan game than five rounds of something simpler. If we only use games where no one feels bad, we're not preparing people for the real hobby. What's a better lesson than learning to bounce back from a bad start?
