I had to pick between a 4-hour game night or my friend's birthday party last Saturday.

That's a tough spot to be in, but it's not really a choice between the two things. A game night can usually be rescheduled, while a birthday is a specific day. Missing a friend's party for a regular hangout can hurt feelings, in my experience. It's better to move the game night to another weekend if you can.

Push back on the birthday party thing a little. I've been in this exact situation and honestly, a game night that's already set for 4 hours is harder to bail on than a birthday dinner. Birthday parties usually have a bunch of people there anyway, so no one's going to freak out if you're an hour late or stop by for 30 minutes. Game nights are small and specific, so if you ditch those four people who were counting on you, that's a lot more noticeable and honestly more likely to sting.

What, you guys actually plan things? I'd just show up late to both like @quinn_nguyen probably expects from me.
