Had to choose between Catan and Ticket to Ride for my group's game night

My Friday group has six people and we only had time for one game last week. I was stuck between Catan with the 5-6 player expansion or Ticket to Ride Europe. I went with Ticket to Ride because setup is faster and nobody argues about trades. Turns out it was the right call. Two of the guys had never played before and they picked it up by the second round. Has anyone else had a game choice totally kill the mood at a session?

Catan is just asking for someone to flip the table when the robber hits their only wheat hex for the third time in a row. Ticket to Ride is the safe bet for keeping friendships intact, honestly. Nothing kills a game night faster than watching someone get cut off from longest route because one guy decided to hoard trains to be a jerk. At least with Ticket to Ride, people blame their own bad planning instead of taking it out on each other. Sounds like you dodged a real bullet there.

Totally agree with you @hugo_ellis, I've had almost the exact same experience. I mean, last time we played Catan, my friend literally threw the dice across the room after the robber landed on his brick hex for the fourth time in a row. Ticket to Ride is way more chill, like people just accept that they drew the wrong cards and move on. It's way better for game nights where you actually want to talk to these people again the next day.
