Vent: My old coal forge finally gave out during a big commission for a gate in St. Louis.

The firepot cracked clean through after about twenty years of service, so I had to finish the scrollwork with a borrowed propane forge, which honestly gave me a new appreciation for the control you can get with gas heat.

Twenty years on a single firepot is wild, I've never heard of one lasting that long. Most guys I know are lucky to get a decade before the cast iron gives up. That's a testament to your setup or maybe just pure stubbornness lol.

Twenty years is a solid run. For a quick fix on an old firepot, you can sometimes line the crack with a high-temp ceramic patch as a band-aid, but it's usually a sign to start shopping. I keep a small, cheap propane forge around just for backup on detail work like that scroll.
