Binged a 90s mecha series I never heard of and the animation floored me

I picked up this old show called The Big O from a thrift store DVD set for $8 last month. I figured it would be cheesy since it aired back in 1999, but the art style and music caught me off guard. The whole noir detective vibe mixed with giant robot fights felt way ahead of its time for me. I learned that older anime can still hold up if you give it a real shot, especially the cell animation work. Has anyone else found a hidden gem from a decade they normally skip over?

Oh man, @the_luna you're so right! I actually found a VHS copy of Robot Carnival at a thrift store once. It's this old anime from the 80s with no dialogue, just a bunch of short robot stories. The animation is so weird and experimental, it made me realize how much personality older shows have. I watched it with my roommate and we spent the whole time pointing at the screen like, "Wait, look at that crazy angle!" Thrift stores are like treasure chests for this stuff, you never know what random gem is hiding in a dusty bin.

Used to think older anime looked dated and clunky, but The Big O proved me wrong. The cell animation gives it a texture and weight that modern digital stuff just can't match. Gonna dig through more thrift store bins for hidden gems like that now.
