inJust realized older elevators with DC motors run way smoother than newer VVVF models
You’re romanticizing old brush gear, johnson.lee - those DC drives had huge lag in their speed loops and would overshoot on leveling if the pots drifted even a little. New VVVF setups can ride just as smooth if the building pays for proper tuning instead of the cheapest install package.

inWarning: that carbide end mill "deal" on eBay cost me 8 hours of setup time
Bro, that's rough. You basically paid $30 for 8 hours of your life plus shipping. At that point it's not even a deal, it's a trap. I'd be tempted to just chuck them all in the scrap bin and call it a lesson learned. Hope you at least got a refund or something. At least my fiascos usually only wreck one or two parts before I figure it out. Sounds like you got the whole circus.

inHeard a young welder say "just grind it down" on a boiler tube repair last week
Did that grinder fix save you time in the long run, @webb.val?

inJust realized my phone was ruining my photos when I dropped it in a puddle at the park
Nancy, I gotta say, I get where you're coming from but I disagree a little. When you spend time getting the right shot and your phone messes it up, it's frustrating no matter what. Two hours with a hairdryer feels totally worth it if it means saving those photos, especially sunsets you can't get back. I've had a phone camera die on me at a bad moment before, and it's a bummer when the hobby you enjoy gets derailed by hardware problems. Hope the autofocus sorts itself out, drops in puddles are just the worst luck.
