The day I switched from dubbed to subbed anime changed everything

I spent about 3 years watching nothing but dubbed anime because I could multitask while folding laundry. Last month I finally gave subs a shot with Attack on Titan season 2. The voice acting just hit different with the original Japanese cast, especially Eren's screaming scenes. My laundry pile got way bigger but I actually felt the emotions more. Has anyone else made the switch and had trouble going back to dubs?

That old timer at the local NAPA changed my mind about using tap and die sets on rusted bolts

Last Tuesday I was at the NAPA on 12th Street getting wiper blades and this retired mechanic in his 70s overheard me complaining about a snapped exhaust manifold bolt on my F-150. He told me I was wasting time with the cheap spiral flute taps from the hardware store and handed me a set of straight flute bottoming taps. I figured he was just blowing smoke but he walked me through it. After using his method with cutting oil and backing out every quarter turn, I got that bolt out clean in under 20 minutes. Three years of snapping bolts and this one trick from a stranger saved me 150 bucks on a shop visit. Anybody else ever have a random guy at the parts counter save your bacon?

Heard a foreman say 'measure once, cut once' is a myth for digital takeoffs

Last Thursday I was at a job site in Austin and overheard a foreman talking to a new guy. He said 'measure once, cut once' is a myth now with digital takeoff software. Said the real trick is to check your model against the site three times before you order materials. That hit home for me. I've been using PlanSwift for about 6 months and I caught myself trusting the numbers too fast. Ended up short on lumber for a deck project last spring because I didn't double check the scale. So now I run every takeoff through two different views in the software before I hit print. Has anyone else made that mistake or found a better way to verify their counts?

Hated CSS frameworks until a buddy showed me his workflow

I was at a dev meetup last Tuesday and this guy named Jesse pulled up his laptop to show me how he uses Tailwind. He had this messy WordPress theme that was all over the place and he cleaned it up in like 20 minutes using utility classes. I always thought frameworks were bloated and overkill for simple sites, but seeing him fix that layout so fast made me reconsider. Now I'm wondering if I should give it a shot on my next project. Anyone else flip on something after seeing it work in a real scenario?

Switched to a 2-flute end mill for aluminum and it changed my roughing speed

I was fighting with a 4-flute for weeks on a job making brackets for a local shop. Chips kept packing and I was stopping every 2 minutes to clear them out. Figured I'd try a 2-flute at the same feeds and speeds just to see. Surface finish was rougher but the cycle time dropped 40% because I ran the spindle at 12k instead of 8k. No chip welding either. Has anyone else seen that big a difference swapping flute counts for different materials?

Had a weird week where every single PC came in with power supply issues

Last Wednesday alone I had three different desktops come into the shop all with the same symptoms - random shutdowns, won't boot, or smells like burning. One was an old HP office PC where the fan in the PSU seized up and melted half the wires inside. Customer said it was making a grinding noise for two weeks before it died lol. Then Friday a guy brought in a gaming rig he built himself, Corsair unit just completely dead after 6 months. No pop or smoke, just nothing. Has anyone else ever gone through a stretch where it's all the same component failing?

That controller board swap that took me 6 hours (should have been 20 minutes)

I was working on a Gen2 MRL in a building near downtown Austin last month. The drive was faulting out every few cycles, so I swapped the controller board like normal but the same fault came back. Turns out I spent 5 hours chasing a bad encoder signal from the motor, not the board itself. I should have checked the encoder wiring first instead of assuming the board was the problem. Has anyone else had an encoder wire rub through and cause intermittent faults like that?

That neighbor who keeps asking for a ride to the store

My neighbor Larry knocked on my door at 7am last Saturday asking for a ride to Walmart because his car was "in the shop." I said sure, then he had me wait 45 minutes while he bought scratch offs and a case of soda, didn't offer gas money, and now he asks every other day. Has anyone else had to figure out where to draw the line with someone who keeps pushing?

TIL my quest for the perfect home espresso grind took way longer than I thought it would.

I've been pronouncing 'Ghibli' wrong for about fifteen years.

My daughter, who is eight, was watching a trailer with me last week and said the name correctly. I always said it with a hard 'G', like 'gibble-ee'. She just looked at me and asked, 'Daddy, why did you say it like that?' I had to look it up and found out it's supposed to be said like 'jee-blee', like the Italian word. I felt pretty silly. Has anyone else had a long-running pronunciation mix-up with an anime studio or title?

Just realized older elevators with DC motors run way smoother than newer VVVF models

You’re romanticizing old brush gear, johnson.lee - those DC drives had huge lag in their speed loops and would overshoot on leveling if the pots drifted even a little. New VVVF setups can ride just as smooth if the building pays for proper tuning instead of the cheapest install package.

Bro, that's rough. You basically paid $30 for 8 hours of your life plus shipping. At that point it's not even a deal, it's a trap. I'd be tempted to just chuck them all in the scrap bin and call it a lesson learned. Hope you at least got a refund or something. At least my fiascos usually only wreck one or two parts before I figure it out. Sounds like you got the whole circus.

Just realized my phone was ruining my photos when I dropped it in a puddle at the park

Nancy, I gotta say, I get where you're coming from but I disagree a little. When you spend time getting the right shot and your phone messes it up, it's frustrating no matter what. Two hours with a hairdryer feels totally worth it if it means saving those photos, especially sunsets you can't get back. I've had a phone camera die on me at a bad moment before, and it's a bummer when the hobby you enjoy gets derailed by hardware problems. Hope the autofocus sorts itself out, drops in puddles are just the worst luck.
