Stop obsessing over keyword density in blog posts

I keep seeing people in here stress about hitting exactly 2% keyword density. Google's John Mueller literally said that metric is meaningless years ago. Last month I ranked a client page with 0.8% density for a competitive local term in Phoenix. What matters is writing natural content that answers the searcher's question. Has anyone else seen better results from ignoring the old SEO rules?

Man I feel personally attacked because I spent like two years thinking keyword density was some sacred law and would literally count words in my drafts like a crazy person with a calculator. Then I wrote a post about plumbing tips for my buddy's site with barely 0.5% density and it outranked a big competitor that was clearly stuffed. It's almost like Google can tell when you're writing for humans instead of trying to trick the robot. Maybe the real keyword density was the friends we made along the way, or something?

@stone.evan nailed it, Google hates the old robot tricks.
