That coastal path I walked alone in my twenties? Took my partner there last weekend. Same peace, double the happiness.

Took my now husband to Echo Point, this spot I had painted as this deeply personal, almost spiritual lookout from my backpacking days. He said the view was nice, then asked if the cafe at the trailhead sold those frozen lemonade things. For me, the old memory didn't get bigger or get covered up, it just now has a weird little footnote where I realized I'd built a whole shrine around a place he basically saw as a rest stop with a okay view.

Notice how sharing a place that was once just yours changes its whole feel. Does it still feel like your quiet escape, or has it become something completely new now that you've brought someone else into it? I always wonder if the happiness comes from the place itself or from watching someone you love see it for the first time. Does sharing it somehow make the memory bigger, or does it just cover up the old one?

Frozen lemonade? He asked about frozen lemonade at a spot like that? I would have just stood there, speechless. It’s like handing someone a family heirloom and they ask if the box it came in is recyclable.
