Almost ruined my vintage stock with a popular wood stain

Honestly, I tried that trendy oil-based stain on an old Mauser stock and it soaked in way too fast. Ngl, I had to sand it back and start over, so test on scrap first.

You know how rushing into stuff usually means doing it twice? Sandraw74 is right about prep, I see the same thing with my students trying to skip steps.
