Rant: The gas station in Bakersfield that wasn't there the next day

I pulled off the 99 late one night for gas and found a station with two pumps and a flickering sign. Filled up, got a coffee from a guy who said 'see you next time', and drove home. Next morning I drove back to check the price on the receipt and the whole lot was just empty dirt, like it had been for years. Has anyone else had a place just vanish after using it?

My buddy swears he stopped at a diner off I-5 that had the best pie he ever tasted. He was driving back through a week later and the building was a boarded-up shell, vines all over it. He asked at the next town over and they said that place burned down in the 90s. Stuff like that makes you question your own memory.

Honestly, that story makes me question your buddy's story, not his memory. I've driven I-5 for years and the mind plays tricks when you're tired. He probably saw a different, similar looking building on the way back. It's easy to mix up exits on a long highway trip. People in small towns also love to spin a good yarn for out-of-towners. The simpler answer is usually the right one.
