That time I tried my dad's old wax filler recipe and it never set right
Back in the day, my dad would mix beeswax and pigment to fill cracks. I tried it on a walnut table last month, but the mix stayed soft and oily. It seeped out after a few days and messed up the finish. I guess modern wood moves different, or maybe his recipe needed a tweak I forgot.

Can't you just scrape it off and try something else?

That idea about drafty houses and air-dried lumber makes total sense. So many old fixes just don't translate to today's materials and homes. I feel for you dealing with that wax mess.

Yeah, that happens a lot with old methods. So many tricks from manuals or family recipes just don't account for how materials have changed. The wood itself is probably from different forests now, and home climates are way more controlled with heating and air. His wax might have worked in a drafty house with air-dried lumber, but not on modern kiln-dried stuff in a sealed room.
