I keep seeing people sanding with the grain for the final pass on oak...

They'll go up to 220 grit but still go with the grain, which leaves those tiny tear-outs from earlier grits. I learned from a guy in my shop, Frank, that a light cross-grain sand at 180 before your final pass with the grain at 220 makes a huge difference. The surface feels way smoother before you even put a drop of finish on it. Has anyone else tried this method on open-grained woods?

Frank's trick works on walnut too. I skip the cross-grain at 180 and just do a really light pass with 220 against the grain before the final with-grain sand. It cleans up those little fuzzies you can't even see until the finish goes on.

Oh interesting, @alice_reed47. So you're saying the 220 against the grain doesn't leave any visible scratches before that final pass?
