Heard a client say they'd never pay more than $50 for a logo

Overheard it at a coffee shop in Denver last week. It made me realize I need to screen for budget way earlier in my discovery calls to avoid wasting hours. How do you guys handle the first 'what's your budget?' question without scaring people off?

But what if they just need a simple logo?

My barber in Boulder told me last month he wouldn't pay over $30 for a haircut, and he's a professional. It's the same mindset. People just don't see the value in skilled creative work until they need it. I ask about budget right after they explain their project goal. I say something like, "Projects like this usually start around X, does that fit what you had in mind?" It filters out the $50 logo crowd fast without being rude.

@parker_bell that's smart, I read a blog about setting clear price floors early.
