Found a perfectly good office chair in the alley behind my apartment in Phoenix last Tuesday, but the gas lift is stuck at max height. Any tips for fixing it without special tools?

Check the release lever first, sometimes it just gets stuck in the up position. You might not need to mess with the gas cylinder at all.

Good call, @river182, I've seen that happen a lot. Does the lever feel loose when it's stuck up, or is there a lot of resistance? Trying to figure out if it's a simple latch issue or if something inside the mechanism is actually binding up. What model are you working on, because some of them have a known problem with that specific part?
