That's a pretty funny mental picture. Did he at least try a fancy move or was it just a basic swing? Olivia_chen35 has a point about the weight being a dead giveaway though. Makes me wonder if he's ever actually held a real blade before, or if he was just going off movie logic.

Honestly that sounds a bit careless on your cousin's part. A real sword has a certain heft and feel a prop just doesn't have. You'd notice the difference just picking it up, or hearing the sound it makes (more of a thud than a ring). Maybe he just got too excited and didn't think it through.
