Just realized my old prop master's trick for fake glass doesn't work anymore

Back in 2015, we'd make breakable windows for fight scenes by scoring real glass with a carbide cutter and baking it. Tried it last month on a pane from a local hardware store and it just shattered into dangerous shards. Turns out the tempering process changed, so that old method is totally unsafe now. Has anyone found a reliable, cheap alternative for creating safe breakaway panes?

Oh man, that "scoring and baking" trick sounds like something I'd try at home with disastrous results. I'd probably end up with a kitchen full of glass and a very confused husband. What do people even use now, sugar glass? Is that still a thing, or is it all fancy plastic?

Remember when my sister tried making sugar glass for Halloween.
