A cheap foam dagger nearly got me kicked off a student film set in Atlanta

I was helping a friend on a short film last month and brought a basic foam prop knife from a costume shop. The director, a guy named Leo, pulled me aside after the first take and said, 'That thing looks like a kid's toy under the lights.' He showed me how the paint was too shiny and the edges were too perfect, making it look totally fake on camera. We had to stop shooting for almost two hours to weather it with sandpaper and dull spray. Has anyone else had a simple prop ruin a shot because it didn't look real up close?

Did Leo ever explain why he didn't check the props beforehand? Seems like a basic thing to do.

and like, okay yeah kim.sandra is right that on a pro set someone would have caught that. but honestly, half the time on student films you're flying by the seat of your pants lol. i've seen directors not check sound until playback and realize the boom mic was in frame the whole time, or not notice the actor's shoes are totally wrong for the scene until after the first take. this foam dagger thing is just one of those "learn the hard way" moments. the real trick is knowing you can fix almost anything with a little sandpaper and some matte spray paint, but you gotta have it in your kit or know where to get it nearby. leo probably learned to do a full prop check before anyone even starts rolling next time.
