Update: I finally tried the 'ask first' method with my neighbor's overhanging tree branch.

Agree with @lisa_murray, my polite ask just led to a bigger argument last year.

...and did you actually get a straight answer from them about it, or did they give you the whole "I'll take care of it eventually" runaround? I've seen people try the polite approach and it works like a charm sometimes, but other times it just makes things more awkward because now there's unspoken tension every time you're both outside. What was their exact response when you asked, because that usually tells you everything about how they handle conflict in general.
