Vent: I swore by my old Weller soldering station until the temp dial went haywire mid-repair on a vintage radio board last Thursday.
I had to finish the job with a cheap $25 iron from the hardware store, and honestly, the joint quality was just as good, which has me rethinking my whole 'you need expensive gear' stance for a lot of basic through-hole work.

Totally get that. Makes you wonder how much we're paying for the brand name and a fancy case.

Paying for the brand name" is basically their whole business model.

Right, the fancy case thing @margaret_nelson. I saw a teardown video once where the actual parts inside cost like a third of the price. The rest is literally just the brand name and that sleek metal shell. It's WILD when you see it broken down like that. They spend more on the box it comes in than some companies spend on their whole phone. Makes you feel kind of silly for paying it, but the marketing is just so good.
