Got humbled by a crusty old power supply at a garage sale in St. Louis
Picked up a beat up 1980s oscilloscope for $20 last Saturday and it ended up having a cold solder joint on the main transformer connector. Spent three hours troubleshooting before I noticed the crack with a jeweler's loupe. Has anyone else had a simple fix like that eat up their whole afternoon?

Oh man, that's the worst kind of headache. It's always the tiny, dumb things that take forever to catch. Glad you finally spotted it though, that must have felt good to fix something for basically nothing.

Ha, tell me about it! I used to be the type who'd get all frustrated and think "why bother tracing every single little wire?" Honestly, I thought it was a waste of time to hunt down something so tiny. But @margaret_nelson, you're totally right. After chasing a loose ground wire for three hours once, I learned my lesson. Now I know spending that little bit of extra time saves you from a whole day of headache later. It's weirdly satisfying when you finally find it, isn't it?
