The day my ladder pump decided to become a fountain

I was on a job near the Sacramento River last week, and the old ladder pump on our dredge just gave up. It started spraying water everywhere, like a weird fountain, for about ten minutes before we could shut it down. We had to patch it with a piece of rubber from a truck tire inner tube to get through the day. Anyone else had a pump fail in a totally ridiculous way?
