Overheard a guy at the hardware store say 'just use more caulk' for a window leak. That's how you get rot.

Oh man, that's the worst advice ever. Caulk isn't a fix, it's just a temporary cover-up that traps the water inside the wall. You gotta find where the leak is actually coming from and fix that properly, or you're just building a mold farm. I've seen people do this and then have to replace whole sections of framing a year later. It's a huge mess.

Wait, did he just say to use MORE caulk on a window leak? That's like putting a bigger bandage on a broken bone. Jakewhite is totally right, it just traps the water. My neighbor did that, slapped a whole tube of caulk on his basement window. A year later he had to tear out the whole sill and the studs were soft as wet cardboard. The smell alone was awful. You just can't skip the real fix.
