I used to skip the primer on old drywall patches until a job in Phoenix last summer.

The joint compound just sucked up the paint and left a shiny spot every time. Now I always use PVA primer first, costs maybe $15 a gallon. Anyone else have a fix for that shiny patch look?

Ever try just sanding the patch a bit more before painting?

Good call, @foster.wade, sanding is key. The trick is actually to sand the area around the patch more than the patch itself. You want to feather that edge out so it blends and doesn't leave a visible ridge. If you just sand the patch material, you can end up making a low spot. A little extra work on the surrounding wall makes all the difference for a smooth finish.

Reminds me of quick fixes that always fail later.
