Finally listened to that old timer about sanding between coats of poly

Guy at the local lumber yard kept telling me to sand with 220 grit between each coat, not skip it. Tried it on a maple desk I'm finishing and the difference is night and day, no more rough spots after the final coat. Has anyone else had luck with that or is it just me being stubborn for years?

Yeah totally agree. I was the same way for years, just skipping sanding between coats on kitchen cabinets I was doing. Tried it on a hickory table last year and it made a huge difference. The final coat came out glass smooth instead of that slightly rough feel you get from dust nibs and stuff.

Wait were you using like 220 grit or something finer between coats? Ive been doing 320 but still get the occasional nib and wonder if i should jump up to 400 or just get better at dust control. Also did you tack cloth between sandings or just blow it off with air? Im working on a walnut desk right now and really wanna get that glass feel without having to wet sand the final coat cause thats always a pain with oil based poly.
