TIL that 'just a quick coat' of paint on a popcorn ceiling is a trap
I thought the warnings about it turning into a gummy mess were overblown, so I went ahead with a roller. Now my living room ceiling looks like a half-melted snow cone and I have to scrape the whole thing. Has anyone actually managed to paint one of these without it being a total disaster?

My buddy tried to paint his popcorn ceiling last fall and it was a total train wreck. He used a sprayer thinking it would be light enough, but it just made all the texture soggy and heavy. Whole sections started sagging down like wet cake frosting after a couple days. They ended up having to scrape the entire room anyway, which made ten times the mess. He said the dust got into everything, even the fridge across the house. What a nightmare way to learn that lesson, right?

Oh man, "wet cake frosting" is the perfect way to describe it. @stellafisher, that story gives me flashbacks. I made the same mistake in a closet once. Thought a light roller would be fine, but nope. Just a damp, droopy mess. The weight of the paint is no joke on that old texture. You're totally right, it always seems to end with scraping and dust covering every single thing you own. Such a brutal job.
