Paid $150 for a fancy stud finder and still drilled into a pipe

Bought this top-of-the-line Franklin Sensors thing at Home Depot thinking it would end my drywall nightmares, but it beeped happy right over a copper pipe I somehow missed. Anyone else spend big on a tool that still let you down in the end?

Tossed my Franklin against the garage wall after it missed a nail plate I'd installed myself. The problem is those things can't tell the difference between copper pipe and rebar in concrete backer board, so they go off for everything and nothing. I switched to a simple magnetic stud finder for $12 and use a cheap endoscope camera from Amazon to peek through a tiny hole before drilling. Your mileage may vary but I've had way better luck with the low-tech approach since I can actually see what's behind the drywall instead of trusting a beep.
