Realized I was running Facebook ads all wrong after 8 months

I was spending like $200 a month on Facebook ads for my local bakery in Austin and getting maybe one or two orders. Then my buddy who runs a BBQ joint looked at my campaign and pointed out I had the targeting set to 'people who like baking' instead of 'people who live within 5 miles'. Changed it last week and already got 14 orders. Anyone else make a dumb targeting mistake that took forever to catch?

It hurts so much when you realize you've been that off for that long, I totally get it.

That "people who like baking" mistake is brutal but honestly it's such an easy trap. In my experience, we all have this habit of looking at things from our own perspective instead of the customer's perspective. It reminds me of how people set their GPS to a friend's house using the friend's city instead of their exact address, then wonder why they end up lost. Your mileage may vary but I've noticed that little blind spot shows up everywhere, from ads to just trying to help someone find your shop.
