Unpopular opinion: I think email marketing tools are holding us back

Had a talk with my neighbor two days ago, he runs a small shop and he said he spends $300 a month on Mailchimp but only gets 40 opens. It hit me different because I keep seeing posts about how you need all these fancy tools and features. But really, isn't a simple list and a personal note better than overcomplicating everything? Has anyone else ditched the big platforms for something basic?

Wait, isn't Mailchimp free for small lists though?

Right there with you. My cousin runs a handyman service and was paying for ConvertKit with all the fancy automations, but barely anyone was reading his newsletters. He switched to just a simple spreadsheet and sending plain text emails from his regular email account, and now he actually gets replies back from customers. Sometimes the basics work better when you're not a big corporation with a whole marketing team.
