Tried A/B testing my email subject lines with just emojis, my open rate tanked 40% in one week

I swapped out all my clever subject lines for just a single pizza emoji on a Tuesday and watched my open rate drop from 22% to 13% by Friday. Has anyone else had a total flop like this with something super simple, or am I just doing it wrong?

Well that pizza emoji must've been one sad slice if it scared away 40% of your readers. Guess people really weren't hungry for plain emoji spam after all, huh?
