Why does everyone keep backing up the same junk twice?

I spent last Saturday finally clearing out my Google Drive and noticed something weird. People always talk about deleting duplicates, but most of us just move files into a new folder and call it a backup. I had 4 copies of the same tax PDF from 2018 sitting in different "organized" folders, plus another one in my email attachments. My buddy Dave does the same thing, he has 30GB of screenshots and half are the same error messages from games. It's not really a backup if you're just duplicating the clutter, right? I spent 3 hours merging folders and deleted about 800 files that were exact matches. Has anyone else found that their "backup system" is just a bunch of copies stacked on top of each other?

Four copies of one tax PDF sounds like a personal problem, not a system failure. I get tripping over duplicates, but three hours of folder surgery on a Saturday says more about your patience than your storage setup. Dave's screenshot hoard is dumb, sure, but he's probably just lazy, not confused about what a backup is. Worst case, you wasted an afternoon and now you've got less junk to scroll through.
