My friend told me to always work at 300 DPI for prints, but my local print shop said it was overkill

My buddy Mark, who does a lot of poster art, insisted I should never work below 300 DPI for any print project. I followed that for a big 24x36 inch piece for a cafe in Denver. When I took the file to the print shop, they said for large format viewing at a distance, 150 DPI was perfectly fine and saved a ton of file size. Has anyone else gotten different advice from artists versus actual printers?

Yeah that DPI debate is everywhere. My old graphic design teacher used to fight with the yearbook printer about it every single spring.

My uncle still argues with his vinyl cutter about vector files.
