The before and after on my grocery bill after I started using a price tracking app

I noticed a huge difference in what I spend on groceries over the last 3 months after I finally tried one of those price tracking apps. It was a 30% drop on my usual weekly trips, from about $150 down to $105. I used to just grab whatever was on the shelf, but now I wait for things like peanut butter and cereal to hit their lowest point. The app showed me that my store's prices cycle every 6 weeks for most pantry items. I also got $40 in cash back through their price matching feature at my local Safeway. Has anyone else seen big savings by timing their purchases around price cycles?

That 30% drop is impressive, I gotta say. But I'm curious about something specific - did the app ever steer you wrong on those price cycles? Like, did you wait for the 6-week low and then find out the store changed their pricing schedule or ran out of stock on the peanut butter right when it was supposed to hit bottom? I had a friend who tried one of those apps and said it kept showing him great deals on stuff that was always sold out by the time he got there, so he ended up wasting gas driving around for nothing. Also, how do you handle it when your favorite brand of something isn't part of the cycle, do you just switch to store brand or wait anyway?

Oh man yes, that sold out thing happened to me with organic chicken last month. What brand do you usually stick with?
