Warning: my old router went from fine to hacked in 2 weeks

I noticed my internet got super slow at night about a month ago. Didn't think much of it until I checked the admin log and saw connections from IPs in Russia and China. Turns out my 5 year old router had a known vulnerability I never patched because the manufacturer stopped sending updates. Has anyone else had an old router get compromised without realizing it?

Kept putting off replacing my old Netgear because it still worked, then one day the admin page was in Mandarin. Pretty sure some guy in Shenzhen was using it to mine crypto while I watched my buffering wheel spin. Changed the password, turned off remote access, and still felt like I needed a shower.

Read somewhere that something like 1.2 million Netgear routers had that exact vulnerability floating around, @mason361. Crazy how long they just sit there working then turn into a botnet in your closet. Makes you wonder how many other routers are still humming along with some stranger's crypto keys in them.
