Hit rank 17 in a 3-year-old game bracket, felt like I cracked a code nobody talks about

I stumbled into an old forum dedicated to a niche game mod from back in 2022. Decided to try the bracket challenge where you guess the order of patches. After 4 tries over two weekends, I landed at number 17 out of 300 players. That felt huge because everyone swears the modders have inside info, but I just guessed based on past patterns. Has anyone else gotten weirdly high in a ranking system and wondered if the top guys are cheating or just lucky?

So I had a buddy back in college who got into this old racing game from like 2010. He was never great at it but one night he tried the weekly time trial just messing around and ended up like 42nd in the world. He was convinced he'd found some secret shortcut nobody knew about but it turned out the game had a glitch where if you hit a certain wall at just the right angle it'd launch you forward. They patched it a week later and his name dropped off the board completely. I think sometimes those top spots are just people who stumbled onto something broken and it looks like skill but it's really just dumb luck.
