Found out Elden Ring sold 20 million copies and I was shocked

I was just browsing Wikipedia the other day looking up fromsoft games and saw Elden Ring passed 20 million sales. That number blew my mind because I remember when Dark Souls was this niche hard game only a few people cared about. Now a game like that is one of the best selling ever across all consoles. Has anyone else been surprised by how big a specific game got compared to what you expected?

Is it just me or do things like this happen all the time now? I feel like I grew up in a world where everything was super niche and then suddenly everyone's into the same stuff.

Yeah but those numbers include PC and all the ports over time. It didn't sell 20 million overnight or anything. Still impressive for a FromSoft game though.

actually i read an article that said elden ring sold like 12 million in its first month alone. that's insane for a game that was supposedly "too hard" for mainstream audiences. i remember being in high school and the only people who knew dark souls were the guys who played demon's souls on ps3. now my little cousin who only plays fortnite asked me about malenia the other day lol. its wild how the internet makes these niches blow up way faster than they used to.
