A guy on a crew in Boise said my bull float technique was making the surface too porous, so I switched to a figure-eight pattern and the difference is night and day.

He pointed out that my straight back-and-forth pulls were just pushing the cream around instead of working it in, and after trying his method on a 20-yard garage slab last Thursday, I'm never going back.

Ever try to trowel a patch job with the wrong tool? I used a margin trowel on a small repair once and it looked like a kid's sandcastle.

Wait you actually tried to use a margin trowel for a patch... @verab28 that's like trying to spread peanut butter with a butter knife. No wonder it turned out all lumpy and weird. You really need that wider blade to smooth things out flat.
