PSA: That handshake at a conference in Dallas last month still bothers me

I met this sales rep from a big vendor at a networking event, and he spent 5 minutes talking about his golf handicap before asking what I did for work. Then he tried to hand me his card without even listening to my answer. Am I wrong for thinking that cold intros should be about the other person first?

Read an article once that said people have about 7 seconds to make a first impression before the other person's brain checks out. That sales rep blew through his whole time talking about himself. The whole point of meeting someone new is to find a reason to follow up, and you can't do that if you don't know what they need. A cold intro should be a conversation, not a monologue. You're not wrong at all.

Yeah exactly. Had a guy waste those 7 seconds bragging about his car.
