That safety stat about deco stops almost made me quit diving
I was reading through a DAN report from 2022 and saw that 1 in 4 diving fatalities had something to do with missed or shortened deco stops. That shocked me because I always thought the gear failures were the main killer, not people rushing the surface. Found the full PDF on their site under the annual incident report. Has anyone here actually changed their whole ascent routine after seeing numbers like that?

Saw a DAN webinar where they said many divers just ignore deco stops entirely.

Does the DAN webinar mention that some of these divers are the ones who end up being case studies for why you shouldn't skip deco stops... I feel like there's a selection bias at play there where the people who ignore the stops and get bent are the ones reporting it. But there's another angle nobody talks about... what about the divers who skip stops and never get bent, do they just get lucky or is there something else going on with their physiology that lets them get away with it... I think the real issue is people taking shortcuts on gear and training, not just the stops themselves.
